Rich Fitzmaurice.

A marketer who likes to be judged on commercial impact, not canapés.

Rich Fitzmaurice, B2B marketing leader based in London

B2B marketing leader

First appointed global CMO and ExCo member at just 27, I am a commercially driven, tech-led marketing leader with a track record of building marketing and communications functions from the ground up inside high-growth, PE-backed and publicly listed businesses.

Particularly adept across professional services, technology and regulated sectors, though equally adaptable beyond them, I have repeatedly turned underperforming marketing functions into measurable pipeline and revenue engines, navigating major corporate events and playing an active role in the achievement of high value exits.

Currently working as an independent Consulting CMO and Editor-in-Chief of B2BMarketing.com, I am now looking to bring that experience back in-house full-time. I have a unique ability to quickly craft a vision, combine it with bold ambition, and find a way to make it happen.

Heavily aligned to sales success.

For me, sales need to hit their numbers for marketing to be judged a success. Earlier in my career, I saw that not be the case and it never sat well with me.  I believe thats why every sales lead I've ever worked with keeps in touch with me to this day, valuing the work we did together and how marketing was always in the trenches alongside them.

Brands that punch above their weight.

There is always a way, you just have to find it.  I've been responsible for global rebrands and PR programmes that earned coverage on the BBC, CNN, NY Times and WSJ etc that we could never have afforded to buy.

A leadership style people respond to.

One of my favourite markers of success is how my teams elevate their performance and careers and how it improves their personal situations.   My proudest metrics are how many marketers would look forward to working with me again and how many former team members have become CMOs too.

I helped recruit Richard to TMF Group. My personal guesstimate is that less than 1% of the time you hire someone who is miles better than your highest expectations – Richard is one such. I had interviewed over 20 CMO’s with professional services backgrounds and wanted something else and Richard was very much that.

Despite not yet being 30 years old at the time he immediately joined our executive committee, more than kept his own, rebuilt and rehired the whole TMF marketing effort and then relentlessly pushed and directed it to really differentiate us from our immediate competitors.

His team was focused and happy and in terms of agreed KPI’s consistently outperformed. Richard is a fabulous team builder, has vision, imagination and ambition and most importantly executes well and delivers. I would work with him again – anytime.

CASE STUDIES

How I approach challenges

Here is a selection of projects that exemplify my creativity.

Case study

Creating global press coverage we couldn't afford

Challenge

TMF Group needed a centrepiece for its thought leadership, in a category where every report, ours included, historically landed flat. We operated in more than 80 jurisdictions, with thousands of colleagues on the ground in each one. We had under £50k to spend.

Solution

We built the TMF Group Global Business Complexity Index: an annual ranking of how complex it is to do business in each jurisdiction, covering accounting, tax, HR and compliance regulation. It drew entirely on TMF's own in-market expertise, data no competitor could replicate without the same footprint.

Results

  • It became a recurring, citable piece of industry thought leadership, achieving press coverage the company couldn't have afforded to buy from Tier 1 media outlets such as BBC, CNN, WSJ and leading governments every year since 2013.
  • Rankings such as "hardest place in the world to do business," and year-on-year shifts tied to government policy, guaranteed coverage.
  • Combined with first-party events and webinars, it's been a gift that keeps on giving.

Case study

Developing a campaign that hit pipeline and reputational goals

Challenge

TMF Group needed to drive revenue in its global corporate secretarial service line and improve its relationship and standing with local regulators who had been putting us under pressure. We decided to emphasise our role in helping clients understand the rules and regulations, comply with them to avoid harsh penalties and show the authorities respect.

Solution

I appointed Pierluigi Collina as our first global brand ambassador to epitomise these values. The legendary football referrer not only understood the rules, he helped shape them and train the world's leading referrers. He enforced those rules on the pitch. And everybody showed him respect.

Results

  • His profile, authority, and universal authority gave the brand a human face, and a story that travelled across 84 jurisdictions, internally and externally..
  • First global brand ambassador in the sector
  • Activation across 84 jurisdictions
  • Live client events and global media coverage
  • We once invited 200 people to an event with him and 1000+ turned up!

Case study

Building an audience instead of paying rate cards to rent one

Challenge

A scary amount of marketing budgets go to renting reach: paying industry bodies or conferences to attend their events, have a booth or sponsor their awards. Expensive ways to rent an audience and look, and feel, like everybody else that is also doing so.

Solution

For B2Bmarketing.com, we did something very, very different. We decided to create the media outlet ourselves; a first-party publication, community and events business we own outright, funded by sponsorship and referral revenue rather than company budget. We control the agenda, the speakers, the venues, the attendees, the narrative.

Results

  • We took the audience into the real world: events drawing hundreds of attendees, self-funded through sponsorship deals and referral arrangements.
  • We built b2bmarketing.com and dedicated jobs and events sites to drive traffic and our database, to new heights.

Case study

Bringing products to market, fast

Challenge

B2B marketers are always introducing their friends to the agencies and MarTech solutions that could help them. Their friend got the help they needed to improve their marketing. The agency got a new client. But the introducer, the one that made business happen by connecting them? often received a cursory thank you - if they were lucky.

Solution

I took Paartner from an idea to MVP to more than 30 enterprise clients, generating the revenue that funded the acquisition of b2bmarketing.com.

Results

  • Sold to more than 30 enterprise clients, myself.
  • Vendor referral tracking with transparent, trackable rewards and compliance workflows.
  • Successful referrals also raised money for charities The Marketing Skills Trust, Young lives Versus Cancer & The Trussell Trust.

Case study

Cleaning the book and finding new revenue streams

Challenge

I had developed a great rapport with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the legendary explorer, after appointing him as a brand ambassador. He revealed that he was feeling the financial and emotional strain of some poor commercial deals he had found himself involved with.

Solution

I reviewed all the contracts of his existing deals, eventually managing to exit the worst ones. I found underpayments from a book deal. Negotiated a new commercial deal with a high street bank and created two brand new revenue streams for him; a licensed spirits brand and a Hollywood feature film.

Results

  • Sir Ranulph Fiennes Great British Rum (2019): a triple-distilled British rum and licensed product line.
  • Explorer (2022): a feature film based on Sir Ranulph's life, sold to the BFI and Universal Pictures. I conceived and pitched the project after finding historical footage of his expeditions in his garage.
  • New revenue streams negotiated across licensing, media and corporate sponsorship.

Case study

Learning new skills to develop better products

Challenge

We were finding development to be too slow and expensive. We wanted to iterate, and ship, much faster.

Solution

When I was marketing corporate compliance, I enrolled on a company secretary course. When marketing global capital markets admin, I gave up my office and sat next to the service delivery team.  So I taught myself to vibe code to speed up product development, bringing ideas to life much faster and shipping prototypes far quicker.

Results

  • I am now even a top 10% developer on Lovable.
  • Self-taught vibe coder using AI-assisted development to ship faster.
  • Understand programming, vibe coding and the importance of security.
  • Comfortable prototyping products and tools end-to-end.

Case study

Securing A-List stars to drive marketing performance

Challenge

One of the tactics that has been proven to deliver in raising brand awareness and lead generation, is linking up with the right brand ambassador at the right time. Whether its for a video voice over or new product launch, star appear has been proven to work again and again, especially in B2B where not many have the bravery to even try.

Solution

From explorers and referees to storytellers, I've managed to secure A-list talent to elevate brand campaigns beyond the budgets. Some talent are remarkably affordable but bring significant value to the end product.

Results

  • Sir John Hurt · Actor
  • John Lithgow · Actor
  • Sir Ranulph Fiennes · Explorer
  • Pierluigi Collina · Referee
  • Sir Patrick Stewart · Actor
